Artist highlight: Jonathan Mayer

Check out Scapegoat Studio by Jonathan Mayer. He creates in paint as well as digitally, and possibly other mediums… I haven’t fully gone through his blog and everything yet!  🙂  Here’s the description…

“Scapegoat Studio was created to fill a perceived void in the liturgical art of present day. In his studies of art produced by the historical Christian Church, Jonathan Mayer observed a marked contrast to what few works of art are being produced for worship now. Not only is there less sacred art being created, but the standard of quality is much lower, and it often suffers from the self-reflexivity that plagues the contemporary art scene. Scapegoat Studio is Mayer’s attempt to return Christian art to its proper setting in liturgical worship—and its proper focus on Christ alone.

“Jonathan Mayer was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Encouraged in the arts, he began illustrating sermons for his grandfather at a young age. After graduating from Nebraska Lutheran High School, he attended Bethany Lutheran College in Minnesota, where he earned a B.A. in studio art in 2007. He began work as a freelance illustrator immediately thereafter. He was married to Emily in 2008. In 2011 he graduated with an M.F.A. in illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. After teaching art at Concordia University Nebraska from 2012-13, he currently resides in Seward, Nebraska with his wife and son.”
