The cover of the April Lutheran Witness features a beautiful new altar, reredos, and windows from Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Basehor, Kansas. Editor Adriane Dorr: “The whole April issue is about church architecture. We even have an article on how we use liturgical furniture like altars and pulpits to teach the faith to our littlest Lutherans.” I’m looking forward to reading it. The fact is that “style” is not neutral; churches are built the way they are for a reason. Art communicates something to the viewer, and in a church setting that impact can be serious and long-lasting, even if it is not even fully understood by the worshiper. Use art and architecture wisely!
